Why our food is so dependent on oil

I read this article written by Norman Church. It details the relationship of oil with our food.
Check out his complete article here.
I find this very disturbing. Our food supply is heavily dependent on transportation and logistics, that if we continuously use up our oil and do not look for alternatives, we may see great difficulty in the future. How on earth will we send fresh produce from the farm to the market? How can we produce grains and other crops that use massive machineries that use fossil fuel?
Unless, scientists act today, the future looks bleak.
