May 27, 2012 Aftermath of the Greenfield Clean Air Run

I have nothing against fun runs or runs-for-a-cause, but when garbage piles up that it defeats the purpose of the run, that is when I get sad.
Yesterday, I was riding my bike along Greenfield Parkway to my friend's house in BelAir, when I happen to see paper cups strewn on what used to be clean road shoulders. I learned later that Greenfield Clean Air Run was held that morning.

Sure, the organizers will clean it up anyway, but we are missing a point here. Plastic cups are made of plastics that when burned, it pollutes the air.

Is there a way to change the method of rehydrating our runners?
  1. Could atheletes be trained to use less water?
  2. Could organizers include hydration packs in race kits? No hydration pack, no race
  3. Coule we dispense of water cups in races?
I leave the challenge to race organizers to find a way to eliminate plastic cups or disposable PET bottles in races.
